About Dundee

Dundee is situated on Scotland's east coast of the River Tay. It is the 4th largest city in the country with a population of approximately 150,000. Due to it's relatively small landscape, it is also the second most densely populated area in Scotland, Glasgow being the first.
There are two major universities situated in the town centre - the University of Dundee and the University of Abertay Dundee, creating a student population of over 20,000. Dundee University is a city-central campus university comprising of 61 buildings on site over 98,000 sq. meters, stretching from Nethergate to Hawkhill. The city also supports 75,000 jobs in 4,000 companies and has been a focus of investment for some time - since 1997 around £1billion has been spent on Dundee.
New developments in industry include software development and biotechnology where Dundee reportedly accounts for 10% of the UK's digital entertainment industry and the University of Dundee is renown for its excellence in biomedical sciences. The infamous gaming company Rockstar North was founded in Dundee by a University of Abertay Dundee graduate.
Dundee has two professional football teams - Dundee and Dundee United. The home grounds of both teams are the closest to each other out of all senior teams in the UK - situated opposite each other on the same street! They are found in the area of Coldside/Maryfield.
Dundee's city centre is surrounded by a dual carriageway - wide Victorian streets and late 19th architecture characterise Dundee's city centre. An investment of £270million into the regeneration of the waterfront areas plus a strengthening retail offering make Dundee city centre both a visitor attraction and ideal place to rent.
North from Dundee's city centre is the desirable Baxter's Park area of Dundee, and further to the outskirts you will find the suburbs of Ardler, Charleston and Fintry. To the north west within urban Dundee is the area of Lochee, a district known historically for its textile industries, the only remnant of which today is the prominent Cox's Stack.
To Dundee's East lies Broughty Ferry, a popular suburb which used to be its own town, complete with a castle (Broughty Castle, found at the entrance to the River Tay). Historically, Broughty Ferry is known for its role in the expansion of the jute industry, and at one point the area was known as the 'richest square mile in Europe'. Barnhill also lies 4.5 miles to the east of Dundee's city centre, along with the area of Douglas & Angus (more popularly known just as Douglas) and to the North-east, Whitfield.
Dundee's popular West End is home to much of the two universities' student population and is a haven of bars, cafes, independent shops, delis and boutiques. It is mainly a residential area and a very popular area for renting in Dundee. As you head west out of town, the area's buildings transform from commonly-found tenement flats to more affluent Edwardian houses. Further west still is the area of Menzieshill and the Ninewells hospital - where university medial students study.
