{"id":3873,"date":"2018-07-19T14:31:38","date_gmt":"2018-07-19T14:31:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3873"},"modified":"2018-07-20T08:31:18","modified_gmt":"2018-07-20T08:31:18","slug":"bestselling-co-alarms-withdrawn-from-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/bestselling-co-alarms-withdrawn-from-sale\/","title":{"rendered":"Bestselling CO Alarms Withdrawn from Sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following an investigation by consumer organisation Which? on carbon monoxide alarms safety, a number of them have been removed from sale on big retail websites such as Amazon and eBay.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s bestseller Topolek GEHS007AW CO sold at \u00a314.99, failed to detect the presence of this silent killer in more than 80% of all tests conducted.<\/p>\n<p>Another three unbranded and made in China alarms, sold on Amazon and eBay for under \u00a310, have also been exposed as not working and withdrawn from sale.<\/p>\n<p>There are a further 50 CO alarms on those websites that closely resemble the three unbranded ones.<\/p>\n<p>All the affected alarms were claimed to meet British safety standards. Now those who happened to have purchased any of those devices, are advised by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.which.co.uk\/\">Which?<\/a> to have them replaced.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Silent killer<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Earlier this year two tenants were found dead and five other were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning in North London.<\/p>\n<p>It is reported that four people in the UK are treated for CO poisoning daily.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/bestselling-co-alarms-withdrawn-from-sale\/kettle-open-flame\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3888\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3888\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kettle-open-flame.jpg\" alt=\"kettle-open-flame\" width=\"838\" height=\"471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kettle-open-flame.jpg 1491w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kettle-open-flame-700x393.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kettle-open-flame-1100x618.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kettle-open-flame-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kettle-open-flame-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to a recent study by Certas Energy, one fifth of people surveyed had never had their boiler serviced and a further two-fifths don\u2019t have a CO alarm fitted in their home.<\/p>\n<p>Although 80% of respondents to the survey knew CO poisoning could be a result of a faulty boiler, 58% of them admitted they wouldn\u2019t be able to spot a carbon monoxide leak.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Here is what to look out for as signs of a CO leak:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>flames on a gas hob of a lazy yellow or orange colour (as opposed to crisp blue)<\/li>\n<li>dark stains on or around appliances<\/li>\n<li>pilot lights that frequently blow out<\/li>\n<li>increased condensation inside windows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even small amounts of gas can cause CO poisoning, which can easily be mistaken for something else, like flu, food poisoning, viral infection and fatigue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/mobile\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2791\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/latest-apps.png\" alt=\"latest-apps\" width=\"618\" height=\"85\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/latest-apps.png 618w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/latest-apps-400x55.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>There are six main symptoms that accompany CO poisoning:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>headaches<\/li>\n<li>nausea<\/li>\n<li>breathlessness<\/li>\n<li>dizziness<\/li>\n<li>collapse<\/li>\n<li>loss of consciousness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>If you suspect CO poisoning you should:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>open doors and windows<\/li>\n<li>turn off the gas supply<\/li>\n<li>vacate the property<\/li>\n<li>contact the landlord or letting agent and call the Gas Emergency Helpline on 088 111 999<\/li>\n<li>see a doctor immediately<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Scotland it is the landlord\u2019s legal responsibility to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/private-renters-three-times-more-exposed-to-carbon-monoxide\/\">CO alarms in all rented properties<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following an investigation by consumer organisation Which? on carbon monoxide alarms safety, a number of them have been removed from sale on big retail websites such as Amazon and eBay.
