{"id":4473,"date":"2019-06-06T11:16:09","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T11:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/?p=4473"},"modified":"2020-12-18T11:16:23","modified_gmt":"2020-12-18T11:16:23","slug":"is-your-engineer-gas-safe-register","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/is-your-engineer-gas-safe-register\/","title":{"rendered":"Is your Engineer Gas Safe Register?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost 2,000 cases of illegal gas work in properties are being investigated by Gas Safe Register across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>According to a new study, a third of adults do not check credentials of a professional working on their property\u2019s gas appliances, putting their households at risk of gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning, fires and explosions.<\/p>\n<p>This is mainly due to lack of understanding and an assumption that all engineers are registered (40%).<\/p>\n<p>Some 18% of respondents said they simply forgot to ask if the trader was Gas Safe Registered; 15% blamed being in a rush and 14% were too embarrassed to ask.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Gas Safe Register \u2013 first port of call<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The research revealed that out of those who did check if their engineer was legally fitting, maintaining or servicing the property\u2019s gas appliances, 28% looked for confirmation in the wrong places such as logos on traders\u2019 websites and uniforms, as opposed to directly with the Gas Safe Register.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/is-your-engineer-gas-safe-register\/gas-safe-logo-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5497\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5497\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/gas-safe-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/gas-safe-logo.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/gas-safe-logo-700x468.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/gas-safe-logo-400x268.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/gas-safe-logo-768x514.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone working on gas appliances who is not on the Gas Safe Register is doing so illegally. Gas appliances can be dangerous if they\u2019re not looked after, so it\u2019s important to ensure they are serviced or fixed by someone who is legally registered and qualified to do so. You can look up your gas engineer\u2019s registration number on the Gas Safe Register website, or call our helpline\u201d \u2013 said Jonathan Samuel, CEO of Gas Safe Register.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Gas safety awareness<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Residential Landlords Association (RLA) has partnered with Gas Safe Register to \u201chelp promote good practice to both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/landlord-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">landlords<\/a> and tenants\u201d when it comes to gas safety in the private rented sector.<\/p>\n<p>RLA Chief Executive, Andrew Dixon, said: \u201cNo-one can cut corners when it comes to gas safety, and it is important that landlords are confident the people they are hiring to carry out essential gas safety works in their properties are competent and trustworthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Find a reputable gas engineer<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>With a constantly growing number of new gas companies on the market, choosing the right one which is fit for purpose, might be a daunting task.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/mobile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment noopener wp-att-2791 noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/latest-apps.png\" alt=\"latest-apps\" width=\"618\" height=\"85\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/latest-apps.png 618w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/latest-apps-400x55.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are some top tips to help you stay safe in your home:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only hire a Gas Safe Registered tradesman to carry out any gas work in your property. Gas Safe Register is the only official gas registration and licensing body in the UK.<\/li>\n<li>Vet the company or engineer thoroughly by checking how long they have been operating for, if their website appears on Google search organic listings and not paid ads and if they have a landline phone number and not mobile only.<\/li>\n<li>Check if they have suitable experience by seeking references or reviews on their services.<\/li>\n<li>Find out if the company has Public Liability Insurance and Professional Indemnity Insurance.<\/li>\n<li>If they are VAT registered, ensure you check their VAT number.<\/li>\n<li>Check if they have a virtual office address or an actual physical office, so they can be traced if something was to happen.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t just go with the cheapest.
