{"id":5031,"date":"2020-03-27T11:01:49","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T11:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/?p=5031"},"modified":"2020-03-27T11:01:50","modified_gmt":"2020-03-27T11:01:50","slug":"letting-agents-exempt-from-business-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/letting-agents-exempt-from-business-rates\/","title":{"rendered":"Letting Agents Exempt from Business Rates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Estate and lettings agents, who were originally left out of the government\u2019s business rates exemption programme, will now no longer have to pay tax in the next financial year 2020-21, starting from 1<sup>st<\/sup> April.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Government\u2019s U-turn<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Following the government\u2019s decision on the country\u2019s lock-down to restrict the spread of the Coronavirus, sales and lettings agents were forced to close their branches. Unlike other businesses, including tanning shops and holiday homes who were offered a 100% discount on business rates, sales and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/letting-agents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lettings agents<\/a> were left high and dry. However, following the property industry\u2019s protest, the government has now taken a U-turn on its original decision and extended the business rates relief to the agents.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/letting-agents-exempt-from-business-rates\/princes-street-coronavirus\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5032\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5032\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Princes-Street-Coronavirus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Princes-Street-Coronavirus.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Princes-Street-Coronavirus-700x525.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Princes-Street-Coronavirus-1100x825.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Princes-Street-Coronavirus-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Princes-Street-Coronavirus-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Princes-Street-Coronavirus-1536x1152.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: \u201cWe are determined to do whatever it takes to support businesses during Covid-19, which is why we have extended business rates relief for the high street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday [25<sup>th<\/sup> March 2020], I am removing some the exclusions for this relief, so that retail, leisure, and hospitality properties that have closed as a result of the measures announced by the Prime Minister in his statement on Monday will now be eligible for the relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will ensure that estate agents, lettings agencies and bingo halls that are required to close will not pay any business rates next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u201cReal boost in uncertain times\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Welcoming the Chancellor\u2019s announcement, Mark Hayward, Chief Executive of NAEA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.propertymark.co.uk\/\">Propertymark<\/a> who had campaigned for agents to be included in the relief, commented: \u201cWe are pleased to see that the Government has listened and acknowledged the concerns from many estate and letting agencies across the country, that resulted in requests to three Secretaries of State last week for the business rates relief to be extended to estate and letting agents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a real boost in uncertain times and will assist all businesses that are finding it difficult to operate in the current environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEligible businesses will be rebilled by their local authority and the new bill will give them the discount of 100%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/mobile\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2791\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/latest-apps.png\" alt=\"latest-apps\" width=\"618\" height=\"85\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/latest-apps.png 618w, https:\/\/www.citylets.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/latest-apps-400x55.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Estate and lettings agents, who were originally left out of the government\u2019s business rates exemption programme, will now no longer have to pay tax in the next financial year 2020-21, starting from 1st April.
