Living in Dowanhill

If Glasgow has a heartbeat, the chances are you will find it right here in the wonderful West End. The area is jam-packed with exciting restaurants, trendy coffee bars, fascinating stores and lively bars. Properties throughout the area are always in great demand throughout the year, and those located in and around Dowanhill are among the most popular of them all.

If you're looking for flats to rent in Glasgow and you need to be able to move freely around the city, this area could fit the bill perfectly. Dowanhill is close to three stations on the local Subway network – Partick, Kelvinhall and Hillhead – and that means you'll be able to get to any city centre location in a matter of minutes. Also, overground trains from Partick can take you to Glasgow Central in just six minutes.

While it's easy to get into the city centre for a night on the town or a day in the shops, it should be noted that you don't necessarily have to hop on the bus or train to have a good time. The West End itself has always been popular with party-goers and lovers of retail therapy, and Byers Road in particular is perhaps the epitome of everyday life in this iconic region.

You'll love being a culture vulture in Dowanhill

Anyone who is living in Partick, Hillhead or Dowanhill will be all too aware of the fact that a number of world-famous landmarks can be found nearby. They include the rightly celebrated Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the tranquil Glasgow Botanic Gardens and, just to the south of Partick's railway station, the Riverside Museum, home of the Glasgow Transport Museum.

Scotland has an extensive network of major roads and motorways, and motorists who live in Dowanhill will find it easy to get away from the city. The M8 lies just to the east of here, and it offers a speedy route to Edinburgh. The A82, which heads north to Inverness, is also close by, while just to the south of the river you'll find the M74 and M77 motorways.

Dowanhill is adjacent to the neighbourhood of Hillhead, which is home to the main Gilmorehill Campus of the University of Glasgow, and as such it plays host to a sizable community of students, lecturers and support staff. This proximity is extremely convenient, in fact a walk from Dowanhill Park to the main university building is only around half a mile.

Plenty of schools to choose from

Because of the sheer scale of houses to rent in Glasgow, parents of young children can be extremely choosy when looking for homes. Being close to good schools is an important factor, of course, and there are several to pick from here. Notre Dame Primary School in Havelock Street is a popular choice, and the secondary school with the same name is also nearby, in Observatory Road.

There are plenty of parks, gardens and public spaces in the area, so getting away for some well-earned sanctuary isn't difficult. Dowanhill Park is delightfully peaceful, and to the west the picturesque Victoria Park is also an oasis of calm. To the east, the 34-hectare Kelvingrove Park provides a golden opportunity to enjoy picnics, cycle rides and of course long walks among the greenery.

It's easy to find good quality healthcare facilities in and around Dowanhill, with many locals attending the Northcote Surgery in Victoria Circus. To the south of the neighbourhood also lies the Broomhill Practice in Broomhill Drive. Gartnavel General Hospital is just to the west of Dowanhill, while the West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital is a little to the south in Dalnair Street.

Property-wise, you'll find a great deal of choice among the bustling streets and tranquil cul-de-sacs of Dowanhill. Many of the buildings were created in Victorian and Edwardian times, symbolising the expansion of Glasgow into the city that you see today. There are plenty of options to choose from, including iconic tenements and, in many areas, brand new developments.
