Living in Finnieston

An attractive neighbourhood that's right at the heart of central Glasgow, Finnieston is the perfect location for anyone who likes to be close to the buzzing heartbeat of an exciting metropolis. If you're into bright lights, cultural landmarks, high end stores and top of the range restaurants, this is the place for you. No wonder it's such a popular area for newcomers and long-time residents alike.

One of the more pleasing aspects of life in this area is the proximity of the local nightlife. Central Glasgow is home to some of the finest restaurants in Scotland, and many of them are within walking distance of Finnieston. One of the most celebrated eateries of all, Two Fat Ladies at the Buttery, is to be found close by in Argyle Street, close to the M8 motorway.

Live music venues abound in the centre of the city, and many of them are within easy reach of people who are living in Woodlands, Finnieston and other neighbourhoods in this particular area. Some of the more notable venues are King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in St Vincent Street, the O2 ABC Glasgow in Sauchiehall Street and, just south of the River Clyde, Glasgow's Grand Ole Opry.

While many local residents will work in the centre of the city's many office blocks and will therefore have a pain-free, stress-free commute, some will have jobs in other parts of the city. The good news for them is that transport links from here are excellent. Exhibition Centre railway station, formerly called Finnieston, offers direct trains to locations such as Larkhall, Motherwell and Cumbernauld.

Walking back to happiness in Finnieston

A number of people who look for flats to rent in Glasgow are keen to live in an area which is pleasant to walk around, and Finnieston ticks all the right boxes for this category. The northern banks of the River Clyde are perfect for summer strolls accompanied by views of the water, and they take in a number of impressive sights, including the Clyde Arc, an iconic city landmark that's also known as the Squinty Bridge.

For motorists, easy links to other parts of Scotland make getting from A to B a relative piece of cake. The M8 motorway passes through the east of Finnieston, so there's a speedy route from the centre of Glasgow to the centre of Edinburgh. It also offers convenient links to the M80, M74 and M77, which enable motorists to get to a number of other towns and cities without difficulty.

In the not so distant past, Finnieston was a highly industrialised area of the city, and was teeming with docks, warehouses and workshops. These days, it's home to a number of modern housing developments, as well as arts and culture establishments. The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, where many concerts and business events are held, is located here in Exhibition Way.

While Finnieston is perhaps an iconic symbol of the urban regeneration of Glasgow, there are still plenty of wide open spaces to be enjoyed locally. The rightly celebrated Kelvingrove Park is right on the doorstep, offering tranquil walks beside the River Kelvin and a number of examples of local wildlife. The excellent Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is also found here.

So much culture to be found right on the doorstep

In addition to the Kelvingrove, Finnieston is close to many other highly regarded museums. The Riverside, home of the Glasgow Museum of Transport, is a short walk away, while the University of Glasgow's Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery is the oldest museum in the whole of Scotland. The high-tech Glasgow Science Centre is located just across the Clyde in Pacific Quay.

Finnieston is ideally placed for students who enrol at the University of Glasgow, and at certain times of the year local properties become highly sought after. The main campus of the University is at Gilmorehill, and is a short and pleasant walk away, through the attractive scenery of Kelvingrove Park. Anyone who is looking for houses to rent in Glasgow will need to be aware of the demands of the student community.

Parents of young children will be delighted to know that Finnieston is close to a number of excellent schools. Primary education can be found nearby at Anderston and Hillhead, for example, while there are secondary schools such as Hillhead High School and the Glasgow Academy, where author JM Barrie once studied, within easy reach of here.

Healthcare facilities in and around Finnieston are high quality, and there are several medical practices to be found nearby. They include Sandyford Surgery in Argyle Street and Radnor Street Surgery. There are a number of hospitals within easy reach, including West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital in Dalnair Street, Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Castle Street and, just across the river, the expansive Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

As you might expect from a city centre location, Finnieston is home to a great selection of gyms and health clubs, including some which are as state of the art as it gets. If you would rather pound the streets on foot or by bike, there are several attractive routes which can be taken. Many of the best itineraries will include views of the River Clyde.
