Crew members, Clive Rooney and Ross McKinney, from the only Scottish team in the 2021 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, Five in a Row join host Gillian Semmler for episode 52 of Lets Talk.

The challenge involves rowing 3,000 miles unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean, from La Gomera in the Canaries to Nelson’s Harbour in Antigua. Taking on average, 5 weeks, crews have to endure extreme physical and mental challenges. In fact the race is described as ‘The World’s Toughest Rowing Race’. Five in a Row, sponsored by Citylets, achieved 3rd place out of 36 boats and set the 2nd fastest record for a 5 person crew in history.

Shark circling them

Clive and Ross share their crew’s experiences of the mental and physical challenges that they endured during the crossing. From hidden tears behind their sunglasses to constant pain, the men reveal their lowest and highest moments of the challenge. They also describe the wildlife and scenery including the intentions of a circling shark.

Reverse Rett

The crew are raising funds for Reverse Rett, a charity which supports people affected by Rett Sydrome – a rare genetic disorder which affects children (primarily girls) between the ages of one and three, causing a progressive loss of motor skills and speech. Ross’ daughter, Eliza has this condition and the crew have raised an incredible amount for the charity.

If you would like to support Reverse Rett, you can still make a donation here.

The crew are also holding an evening at the Marine, North Berwick on Wednesday 30th March 2022 at 7.30pm, hosted by Scottish broadcaster, Glenn Campbell. Details can be found at fiveinarow.co.uk
