Lets Talk’s 70th episode features Steven Cafferty of Deaf Action talk about the challenges and barriers that hard of hearing and deaf people face when applying for a property, attending viewings and then living in the property itself.

Steven, who lost his hearing through meningitis at the age of one, informs the listeners about the different spectrums of hearing loss. He now works for Deaf Action and explains about the organisation, as it was the first of its kind in the world. They are very proud to be a deaf-led organisation with half of its staff being deaf and many other employees grown up with deaf families and friends.

Deaf Action has a wide variety of hard of hearing and deaf services to help make life easier and more fulfilling for those that feel they need them. Steven talks about their relatively new service, Safe and Sound which was funded by SafeDeposits Scotland Charitable Trust and designed to help landlords and deaf tenants. Deaf Action have a team of experts who can advise and install specialist equipment, and Steven informs Gillian on how these are financed.

Steven also talks about his medal win at the Turkey Deaflympics in 2017 and how golf has opened up new avenues to him.
